Seattle Seahawks QB Sam Howell shines in second preseason game

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Howell is making the most of his extensive playing time this preseason.

After a solid debut with the Seahawks last week, Howell was reinstated in the starting lineup for Saturday's preseason game against the Tennessee Titans. In one half, Howell completed 11 of 14 passes for 153 yards and a touchdown, and one of those incomplete passes was a drop. Perhaps most importantly, he led Seattle to three consecutive scoring drives (a touchdown and two field goals) to end the half, far better than anything the team had the rest of the half.

Despite his strong performance, Howell focused on what he could do better after the game.

“I thought it was pretty solid,” Howell said. “I would have liked to have ended that drive with a touchdown, I think it was about halfway through the second quarter. But overall, I thought it was pretty solid. I would have liked to have scored a few more points, but that's all I can say.”

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald, on the other hand, did not hold back with praise for his quarterback.

“I thought Sam was really good,” Macdonald said. “I thought we moved the ball. I thought he made smart decisions. We were in the huddle all the time and I felt like we could improve that in the second half. I'm pleased. I'm building on his performance last week and then at practice on Wednesday and Thursday.”

Howell came to Seattle in the offseason via a trade with the Washington Commanders, for whom he started all 17 games last season. Howell, who is now playing as a backup to Geno Smith, had some strong days in the offseason and seems to be getting better with each passing day.
