If you are between the ages of 12 and 27 and have been scrolling through social media in the last few weeks, then chances are you have come across people in various social situations who talk about being “very reserved and very mindful”.

And in some happy news this week, it was announced that content creator Jools Lebron, the woman who started the “low key” trend, will finally be able to fulfill her wish to undergo gender reassignment surgery as the trend has currently taken the internet by storm.

If you don't know what we mean when we say “low key”—or if you've been living under the moon since July—allow us to enlighten you.

What is 'Demure'?

Technically speaking, “restrained” is of course not a new word.

For years it has been defined as an attitude of reserve, modesty, shyness and detachment, with the adjective typically describing the expected character of a woman.

Now, however, a group of people in their twenties have given the word a whole new meaning, and basically the whole thing is a bit of a joke.

The “low-key” trend seems to poke fun at the influencer minefield of relentlessly new aesthetics and “cores” that we all have no desire to keep up with.

At first we were “clean girls” with our “glass skin” and perfectly combed back hair.

Then we were “mob wives,” wearing thick eyeliner and cheetah print, and most recently we were all trying to live our “brat summer” to the fullest by stealing cigarettes from strangers, wearing last night’s makeup, and trying to be labeled “total chaos” by everyone who saw us.

The new “modest” trend deliberately makes fun of the constantly rotating conveyor belt of social media trends and buzzwords.

Who is Jools Lebron?

Although the trend is purely satirical, it was originally started by social media star Jools Lebron.

The beauty influencer and all-around icon deviated from her usual content earlier this month when she described getting ready for work, inadvertently starting a raging social media fire that can no longer be put out.

She filmed herself sulking in the car and explained: “I'm not coming to work with green frizz. I'm not going to look like a clown when I go to work.”

“I don't do too much, I'm very attentive at work. See how I look very presentable? The way I came to the interview is the way I go to the job.”

LeBron continued to joke: “A lot of you girls go to the interview looking like Marge Simpson, and you go to work looking like Patty and Selma.”

What did the trend mean for Jools?

Since she posted her clip, millions of other content creators, social media stars and even red carpet celebrities have jumped on the bandwagon, declaring how “very low key and very mindful” they are.

For this reason, Jools has become one of the most talked about internet sensations of today.

She now has an incredible 1.6 million followers on the video-sharing app and a whopping 98.9 million likes.

But Jools' unexpected fame hasn't just brought her social media success, as this week she also announced that she has undergone gender reassignment surgery.

Jools, who identifies as a transgender woman, announced the exciting news again on TikTok, encouraging her followers to always follow their dreams, even if it's just by posting a video.

“Hey, um, maybe you should make the videos,” she says, wiping tears from her eyes.

“Because one day I was playing cashier and making videos on my break, and now I'm flying across the country hosting events, and I'll be able to finance the rest of my transition.”

Smiling, Jools added: “Finally, I said it without crying!”

In the comments below, hundreds of fans sent the star their congratulations.

“See how she encourages others to succeed? Very thoughtful, very reserved, very community-oriented,” one teased.

Another wrote: “Hope your transition is smooth and very low key.”

“See how she never gave up? Very reserved,” raved a third.
