NEW JERSEY (WPVI) — Severe storms caused disruptions to roads and rails Sunday evening, affecting travelers across the East Coast.

A driver captured video of a flooded road in Wayne, New Jersey.

Heavy rains in North Jersey forced Amtrak to temporarily suspend train service between New York and Philadelphia.

Officials said this was due to flooding in Newark around 8:20 p.m.

“I'm devastated. They keep changing the update,” said Marcia Roye, who was traveling to Maryland from Philadelphia's 30th Street Station. “I'm going to wait and hopefully get there eventually.”

Amtrak announced that service between 30th Street Station and New York Penn Station resumed around 10:30 p.m.

In Bethany Beach, Delaware, storms caused severe flooding and road closures.

State police said northbound Route 1 was closed to traffic at the Indian River Inlet Bridge at Fred Hudson Road due to flooding on the north side of the bridge.

Police advised drivers to find an alternative route until the road was clear.

Beachgoers have been warned after more than a dozen rescues were carried out on the New Jersey coast in stormy weather

In Ocean City, New Jersey, the beach was closed after thunder and lightning.

Ocean City Beach Patrol officials said there were at least five major rescues in the water due to strong waves and swimmers out of sight.

According to the head of the beach patrol, the waves in Ventnor City were also heavy and usually reached a height of 1.5 to 1.8 meters.

Lifeguards rescued 17 people there on Sunday, authorities said. A warning for rip currents remains in effect along the New Jersey coast until Tuesday.
