Editor's note: The Ball State Daily News contacted Muncie Central about this article but did not receive a response.

The 2024 Delaware County volleyball season is upon us, and while last season had its highlights, the 2024 season has some hidden gems to offer. Head coaches across the county have highlighted a few athletes to keep an eye on throughout the season.

Yorktown

Head Coach: Stephanie Bloom

Record 2023: 27-6

Senior Shanese Williams – Middle Attacker

“She is returning from a season-ending knee injury last year,” Bloom said via email. “Because she was unable to play for nearly a year, she had some initial difficulties getting back into the swing of things. But as she has become more confident, she has become more like the player she was before the injury. I believe she will continue to improve and be an integral part of our offense and defense at the net.”

Senior Ari Wright – outside attacker

“She is expected to play a different role this year and we believe her offense on the right side will disrupt the defense on the other side of the net,” Bloom said via email. “She plays with more grit as a senior and will be a great addition to the team.”

Head Coach: Kylie Johnson

Record 2023: 9-14

Senior Addie Phillips – Outside Attacker/Setter

“Addie has been a full-time player on the varsity team for four years. She has been All-County the last two years. She has committed to Polk State in Florida and will be our offensive leader,” Johnson said via email.

Senior Brylie Tuttle – Libero

“She is our returning libero who gets better every season. She is our defensive anchor and takes responsibility for the pass when receiving serves,” Johnson said via email.

Wapahani

Head Coach: Valorie Wells

Record 2023: 19-9

Sophia Beeson – player in the six-man rotation
“Her ability to be quick and play with a quick arm is huge for us,” Wells said via text message. “She is also a great defender and serve receiver. She can hit the ball hard and has great control with her platform when receiving serves. She is our power/fighting player.”

Kami Rivers – Player in the six-rotation

“Her ability to hit different shots on the court and place the ball with power and control is a key player for us,” Wells said via text message. “She also has the ability to read the court as a defender and not drop the ball. She is also one of the most consistent servers/aces on the team, which is what we need. She is our IQ/grit player.”

Cowan

Head Coach: Amber Huber

Record 2023: 8-19

Sophomore, Savannah Hall – Middle Blocker

“We hope to be able to involve her more in the offense this season,” Huber said by email. “She was a [Outside Hitter] last season, but she will be a [Middle Hitter] this season. Savannah is aggressive and determined. It will be important for us to get her involved in the offense, but she is also one of our best defensive players and pass receivers.”

Junior Keira Drew – outside attacker

“She'll see a lot more sets this year and can hit left, center or right,” Huber said via email. “She has a lot of potential if she takes advantage of it. She'll play primarily in the front row, but she has a great serve, so she'll spend a little time in the backcourt as well.”

Daleville

Head Coach: Gayle Hicks

Record 2023: 20-10

Senior Trishell Johnson – Middle Blocker

“Trish could reach the career-high 1,000 kills this year,” Hicks said via email. “She is our team's best killer and shows great leadership on the court. She will be one of our captains this season. After a year where she earned All-Conference and All-County honors, she will play a big role for us this season.”

Senior Cassidy Rees – Setter

“Cassidy could also set another career high this season. She is approaching the 1,000-set mark in her career,” Hicks said via email. “She is just another great leader for us on the court. Her mission is to have her best year yet this year as a senior.”

Wes Del

Head Coach: Jon Vernon

Record 2023: 25-7

Senior Amelia Hudson-Roberts – outside attacker, middle attacker

“She is the only returning starter from the 27-5 2023 team, played for Pancho Alavarez this club season with the Munciana Aztecs and is a big, strong and athletic player who will be the leader of our team this year,” Vernon said via email.

Junior Taylor Freeman – Setter

“She will be the ball-handling leader on our team in 2024. Taylor has a great work ethic every day in practice and pushes herself and others to get better. She is simply a natural leader,” Vernon said via email.

Muncie Burris

Head Coach: Jim Craig

Record 2023: 31-4 and 2A state champion

Senior Lilly Howell – Middle Blocker

“Lilly is excited for her senior season,” Craig said via email. “She has played in every varsity game since her freshman year and brings a lot of experience to the field. She has great skills, but her true strength is her resilience and leadership skills, which she demonstrates every day.”

Junior Mya Trammell – outside attacker

“Despite recovering from an ACL injury, Mya has made remarkable progress, likely due in part to her tremendous drive to prepare for her junior year,” Craig said via email. “She was outstanding in the state championship game in November and hopes to continue her impressive play this season. Her work ethic and leadership skills have helped us in our preparation.”
