Five new Steam games you probably missed (August 19, 2024)

On an average day, around a dozen new games are released on Steam. And while we think that's a good thing, it can understandably be difficult to keep up. Potentially exciting gems are sure to get lost in the deluge of new games if you don't go through every single game that releases on Steam. And that's exactly what we've done. If nothing catches your fancy this week, we've rounded up the best PC games to play right now and a running list of the 2024 games coming this year.

Oddada

Oddada is about composing music using a series of strange toys. Each toy must be approached or 'played' differently, and each has its own distinctive sonic character. One instrument, for example, takes the form of a simplified isometric city-building game, with each object placed on the grid changing the overall melody or rhythm. Don't mistake it for a mysterious version of a DAW: it's definitely a game, albeit one that aims to capture the experimental fun of making music. With each playthrough, the order of the instruments switches, allowing for a huge range of results, and once you've created a series of tracks, you can create digital mixtapes that can be exported to audio files. The purple diamond

Whenever I see the familiar color schemes of the EGA era, my heart stops and I wants to go back. Many modern adventure games imitate the glorious VGA chunkiness, but few aim for EGA and do it as well as The Crimson Diamond. It's a point-and-click detective adventure starring “reluctant detective” Nancy Maple, who has arrived in the barren Ontario community of Crimson to investigate a massive diamond. Expect a mix of exploration and puzzle-solving good enough to earn a recommendation from Sierra co-founder Roberta Williams.

This tactical RPG replaces the usual fantasy elements with hard-hitting, supernatural westerns. Players take on a rotating cast whose different perspectives shed light on a conflict between colonizers and incumbents, but in this grim mix are monsters and a more varied approach to environment design than “western” suggests. It's the combat that's really fun, though: you choose your moves in advance and watch how they play out, but Arco forgoes the usual grid-based gameplay in favor of a more flexible line-based approach. It looks like a lot of fun, and it's deeper than it first appears.

Intravenous II

Like its 2021 predecessor, Intravenous 2 may look like Hotline Miami, but its approach is pretty much the opposite. It's a slow-paced tactical shooter with a big emphasis on stealth. That's not to say you can't just barge through doors and gun down evildoers as loudly as you can, but that would probably be missing the point. This sequel has a branching narrative that follows the adventures of Sean and Steve, who, despite their amusingly boring names, find themselves embroiled in a hectic kidnapping affair that can only be solved with tactical thinking and guns. There are tons of weapons and gadgets at your disposal, and plenty of options for customization.

At first glance, Feed the Deep looks a bit like Wario's Dave the Diver: you navigate underwater labyrinths looking for things, but instead of cheerfully bright greens and blues, these waters are murky and ominous. To keep humanity's now-necessary airborne cities afloat, the protagonist must feed a mysterious creature that inhabits the seabed. Along the way, you'll come across upgrades and items that, in roguelike fashion, change the course of your procedurally generated run. It's inspired by Spelunky and Dome Keeper and made by the creator of Jetpack Joyride, so you know it's going to have the exquisite, addictive movement that can turn a good idea into a great game.
