A suspect in an Aug. 6 arson at the Jewish Museum of Maryland was arrested Aug. 10 during a SWAT team raid, Baltimore police said.

The 66-year-old man had previously been convicted of arson offenses, police said.

Dr. Sol Davis, executive director of the Jewish Museum of Maryland, said on August 8 that a fire was deliberately set at the museum's main entrance and that the Baltimore Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire 20 minutes later. Davis reported that no one was injured and the museum sustained only superficial damage.

Members of the neighboring B'nai Israel Synagogue and the Jewish Council of Baltimore gathered outside the site before Shabbat on Aug. 9 to show their “connection” following the incident, the museum said on Facebook on Aug. 10.

The museum has been undergoing modernization, renovation and reconstruction since June 12 and will be closed to the public until the end of 2024.
