Official statement from the Morris County Sheriff

Last week, Morris County Sheriff's Deputy Macey Stewart uncovered a plot by a Morris County resident to kidnap and murder another person. Sheriff's Detective Kellie Hooper quickly assembled a team, including Texas Rangers, to investigate the plot and intercept the suspect before anyone was harmed.

Sergeant Hooper and Texas Ranger David Stewart quickly developed solid probable cause to obtain an arrest warrant and a search warrant for the suspect's property. A precise plan was devised to take the suspect into custody and on Monday, August 13, 2024, Corporal Bruce Thompson of the Sheriff's Office, Deputy Darrius Everett and Texas Ranger Joshua Mason took Mark Anthony Johnson, 49, of the Naples, Texas area, into custody without injury to him or the arresting officers.

The search warrant for Johnson's property resulted in the seizure of supplies and materials intended to be used to kidnap, torture and murder the intended victim, including deadly weapons, a large quantity of chemicals and other materials used to destroy evidence of the crime.

Johnson was charged with conspiracy to commit capital crimes and is being held in the Morris County Jail on $1 million bail.

I am extremely grateful to my team of investigators and the Texas Rangers for their diligent and efficient work. They worked many hours to get Johnson into custody before anyone was harmed, and I am proud of them for catching him without anyone getting hurt.

An arrest is not a conviction and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
