UP Congress chief calls BJP's action against Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah a conspiracy to weaken the party – India News

Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Ajay Rai has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is plotting to undermine the Congress government in Karnataka. This comes after Governor Thawarchand Gehlot decided to authorise the prosecution of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in connection with the alleged scam related to the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA).

Speaking to ANI, Rai claimed, “This is a conspiracy of the BJP. They want to weaken the Congress government wherever it is in power. How many scams has former Karnataka BJP chief minister Yediyurappa committed? 40 per cent commission was agreed but nothing happened. The BJP is trying to torture and defame the Congress.” Rai also hinted that the governor is acting on the instructions of the central government.

On August 17, the Karnataka Governor's Secretariat issued an official order announcing that the Governor had approved prosecution of Siddaramaiah under Section 17 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and Section 218 of the Bharathiya Nagarika Suraksha Samhitha, 2023 for the alleged offences mentioned in a petition filed by social activist Snehamayi Krishna. The petition accuses Siddaramaiah and nine others of forging documents to seek damages from the Mysuru Urban Development Authority.

Siddaramaiah reacted sharply to the governor's decision, saying, “The governor's permission to prosecute me is unconstitutional. The governor should act as an agent of the constitution, but he is behaving like an agent of the central government and the BJP.”

Earlier this month, Siddaramaiah had denied the allegations and claimed that all actions taken under the MUDA were lawful and that the replacement plot allotted to his wife in 2021 was done during the tenure of the BJP government and was in accordance with the law.

Ajay Rai's comments reflect the growing tensions between the Congress party and the BJP. The Congress party accuses the BJP of misusing constitutional offices to target its politicians and destabilise state governments.
