“Major” water leak forces Big Beach to relocate

Watford's Big Beach has been forced to relocate…after being destroyed by a 'major' water leak.

Watford Borough Council announced today (August 14) that the annual summer attraction will be moved from its usual place in the parade due to “emergency works” in the area.

This means the Big Beach will be located next to Watford Central Library when it opens from Friday 16 August to 30 August.

The Big Beach takes place every year as part of the parade. The council has not yet confirmed the reason for the emergency works, but Hertfordshire County Council has said it will carry out urgent works in The Parade from today to “assist in locating a major water leak”.

The repairs are expected to take place opposite 112-116 Faircross House and the Kaziu Barber Shop, according to the filing on the Causeway one.network website.

The relocated Big Beach will offer the same attractions for children and families. The library area provides a perfect environment for families to enjoy the sunshine, build sandcastles and take part in our exciting beach activities.

“I encourage everyone to come along, relax and make the most of this unique summer event right in the heart of our city.”

The city council stressed that the attraction will continue to offer free buckets and shovels, deck chairs, picnic tables and umbrellas.

The beach hut will also be open again daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the new location and will offer information and assistance.

It is unclear when WBC was first informed about the work and where the leak is believed to be located.

Watford Borough Council has been contacted for further information.

Note: This story has been updated because an earlier version stated the park was already open, even though it is not scheduled to open until Friday.
