Kolkata, Aug 17 (PTI) – The Trinamool Congress held rallies in various parts of the state on Saturday, demanding exemplary punishment for those involved in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and protesting against a “conspiracy by the Left and the BJP to destabilise West Bengal”.

Carrying placards reading “Doshider shasti chai” (We demand punishment of the culprits), hundreds of party workers and supporters held rallies in various parts of the state, including Serampore in Hugli, Naihati and Belgharia in North 24 Parganas and Chinsurah in Hugli and Purulia.

“We also condemn the conspiracy of Ram-Baam (BJP and Left) to destabilise West Bengal and disrupt the prevailing peace by politicising a shocking incident of rape and murder,” TMC MP and former state minister Partha Bhowmik said at a rally in Naihati.

In Kolkata, senior minister and mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation Firhad Hakim led a rally in Kidderpore district.

The rally demanded the death penalty for the rapist and murderer while claiming that the state government ensures the safety of women in the state and has zero tolerance towards sexual assault.

“The opposition is politicising a tragedy when the state has taken all steps to catch the culprits. We want the CBI to complete the investigation and find all the culprits as soon as possible,” Hakim said.

The protests come in the wake of anti-government rallies and sit-ins by the opposition BJP and CPI (M) as well as the Congress demanding justice for the victims.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had led a rally in Kolkata on August 16, demanding death penalty for the accused and denouncing the “unholy nexus” between the opposition parties that is trying to instigate the people and destabilise West Bengal. PTI SUS ACD
