The Kolkata Police are currently investigating a possible larger conspiracy behind the vandalism at RG Kar College and Hospital, where a doctor-student was raped and murdered. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is also investigating the case in detail and has already questioned several people.

Police are investigating whether the mob had any intention of destroying the crime scene, the seminar hall, NDTV quoted sources as saying. Despite being outnumbered, police managed to stop the mob from damaging the area.

Police are also investigating whether there was an attempt to provoke unrest by creating a situation that would have forced police to use force during peaceful nighttime protests by citizens.

Sources told NDTV that one of the things being investigated is whether troublemakers had infiltrated the civil protests under the slogan “Reclaim the Night” to instigate larger unrest.

“We have to be cautious in our response. We cannot resort to violence,” said Calcutta Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. “If indeed a group of people have come with the intention of causing trouble, give us some more time and we will find them,” he said.

Police reported that they managed to secure the crime scene, although several officers were injured in the mob attack.
