Parliament Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has called on ministers, MPs, district heads and other leaders to help rebuild Mepe and other flood-affected areas.

He stressed that any challenge affecting even a single community in the Volta Region poses a risk to the security and stability of the entire region.

This was the content of a speech read out in his name during the 68th Aƒenorto Festival.

The spokesperson stressed the urgent need for stakeholders to actively participate in the reconstruction of Mepe and other affected communities, underlining that the required support from these leaders is not a luxury but a necessity, especially in times of crisis.

He also reminded the Volta River Authority (VRA) to implement carefully considered and safer technical options in all future oil spill investigations.

The spokesman stressed that it is important to ensure that such measures bring blessing and comfort to the people of Mepe and the surrounding area and not hardship and suffering.

As the 2024 general elections approach, Mr Bagbin urged all citizens to fulfil their civic duties in the spirit of peace and unity, stressing the importance of national stability during this period.

A speech by the Executive Chairman of Oswal Investments Group, Humphrey A. Williams, read by Mr. Francis Kpolu, acknowledged the devastating impact of the recent floods on Mepe.

Mr Williams described the floods as a source of unimaginable challenges that destroy lives and property.

However, he also stressed that the disaster brought out the best in the people of Mepe, as the community came together to rebuild and recover, embodying the true spirit of Aƒenorto – a time when sons and daughters return home to renew their bonds and reaffirm their commitment to one another.

He reminded those present that the road to recovery is far from over and stressed the importance of completing key projects such as the Mepe Health Centre with its theatre, men's and women's wards, the Mepe Development Community Centre, as well as the TVET facilities and the artificial turf.

He stressed that these projects are crucial for the future of Mepe and that continued support is essential to make these visions a reality.

“This festival is more than just a celebration,” Williams noted. “It is an expression of our resilience and a promise for the future. Let us be proud of the progress we have made and commit to meeting any challenges that lie ahead with the same unity and determination that has brought us this far.”

He called on all sons and daughters of Mepe, both near and far, to contribute to the development projects to build a sustainable and prosperous future for the Mepe traditional area.

The annual Aƒenorto Festival is an important opportunity for the people of Mepe to reflect on their history, celebrate their culture and make plans for the future.

This year's event was marked by both reflection and determination, reaffirming the community's commitment to overcome adversity and build a better future for generations to come.
