Almost 20% of fatal accidents in Germany are caused by young drivers, according to the report

According to a recent report, Delaware has the highest percentage of fatal traffic accidents in the country caused by teenagers.

This report, conducted by Johnfitch.com, ranked Delaware ninth in the United States in terms of teen driving rates due to the high number of teen fatalities and drunk driving among teens in the state.

The report found:

  • 19.75% of all traffic fatalities in Delaware are caused by drivers between the ages of 15 and 20, the highest percentage of the 50 states studied.
  • Delaware also led the state in the number of fatalities in traffic accidents caused by young people, with 3.1 deaths per 100,000 residents.

Despite these high statistics, the report ranked Wyoming, Kentucky and New Mexico as the three highest-risk states for novice drivers due to the high number of deaths among novice drivers and the high number of speeding and drunk driving cases among teens.

The Johnfitch.com report analyzed the number of traffic fatalities among teen drivers, the number of teen driver deaths per 10,000 license holders, and the frequency of drunk driving incidents to determine the score for each state across the country.

New Hampshire, New Jersey and New York are among the safest states for teen drivers.

Fatal accidents

According to the report, there were 5,239 deaths in 2022 due to crashes involving drivers aged 15 to 20, accounting for 13% of all road deaths.

While Delaware leads the state in the number of fatalities in teen-caused traffic crashes, it is tied with Nebraska for ninth place in the number of teen driver deaths – two deaths per 10,000 student drivers, the report said.

About 8.6% of teen drivers in Delaware were involved in fatal traffic accidents.

Distraction, speeding and drunk driving

The most common causes of fatal road accidents among teenage drivers in the country were speeding and drunk driving (40% and 28% respectively).

Delaware did not rank in the top 10 for distracted driving, speeding or drunk driving among teen drivers involved in fatal crashes.

New Mexico (3.89), Wyoming (3.88) and Kentucky (3.76) were the states with the highest number of teen drivers per 10,000 licensed teens involved in fatal crashes due to speeding.

Wyoming (2.91), Texas (2.72) and Nevada (2.33) had the highest rates of teen drivers involved in fatal accidents due to drunk driving.

The report found in Delaware:

  • 0.28 out of 10,000 young novice drivers were distracted when a fatal accident occurred.
  • 1.13 out of 10,000 young novice drivers were driving too fast when a fatal accident occurred.
  • 1.13 out of 10,000 young novice drivers were drunk when a fatal accident occurred.
