1 free agent at each position that the Warriors may have missed

0

For the first time in several years, the Golden State Warriors had the luxury of spending money on free agents during the offseason.

With Chris Paul's non-guaranteed contract voided and Klay Thompson signaling his intent to sign with the Dallas Mavericks, the Warriors now have access to the mid-level non-taxpayer exception and other avenues to attract free agents that they wouldn't necessarily have been able to do in the past.

Golden State used its newfound financial prowess to sign De'Anthony Melton to a one-year, $12.8 million deal, while adding Buddy Hield (four years, $37.8 million) and Kyle Anderson (three years, $27.7 million) in the same sign-and-trade deal that brought Thompson to the Mavericks.

Most would say the Warriors did a good job. Each of the three players will likely play an important role in Steve Kerr's rotation next season. But realistically, could they have done better? Let's take a look at one player from each position that the franchise might regret missing out on:

Point Guard: Tyus Jones (signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Suns)

Golden State's passing on Tyus Jones is perhaps the biggest stroke of luck of the entire offseason. The 28-year-old moved to a direct league rival. After averaging 12.0 points, 7.3 assists and a three-point percentage of over 41% with the Washington Wizards last season, most expected Jones to get a contract worth $10-12 million per season.

Instead, one of the league's best backup point guards opted for a one-year deal to prove himself on a team that desperately needs his ball-handling and playmaking skills. On the other hand, the Warriors will have to rely on second-year Brandin Podziemski to fill the minutes in the absence of Stephen Curry next season. While the 21-year-old is immensely talented and could prove up to the task, it's a significant risk for a team desperate to get back into the playoffs.
