The police in Ekiti State have arrested and paraded nine suspects on charges of armed robbery, murder and conspiracy in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

While parading the suspects outside the command headquarters in Ado-Ekiti, the state Police Commissioner, Akinwale Adeniran, said: “The last two months have undoubtedly been quite challenging as criminal elements developed a new method of committing their crimes by using motorcycles to rob and attack their innocent victims, especially Point of Sale (POS) operators with weapons, in some cases resulting in deaths.”

“Immediately after the first incident on June 20, 2024, I gave the command, intelligence and tactical units the marching order to fish out the gangsters responsible for the barbaric acts.

“You will recall that some of these hoodlums were arrested, investigated and paraded on June 26, 2024. The intensified efforts led to the arrest of three others who were also investigated and paraded on July 2, 2024. They were all arraigned and remanded at the Correctional Centre, Ado-Ekiti.

“Through the persistent efforts of our intelligence and tactical units, additional suspects on our watch list were arrested, which is why we are here today, while the few remaining are currently on the run. Well, there will be no hiding place for them.”

The Commissioner reiterated the Command’s commitment to ensure the security of lives and property of all innocent citizens of the State.

Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Sunday Abutu, said six of the suspects were involved in the attack and robbery of no fewer than nine POS operators in Ado-Ekiti between June and August.

“Acting on a credible tip-off, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) swooped on hoodlums in their various hideouts and arrested one Ajisafe Doyin alias D-MONEY, Olabanji Joshua alias BJ, Fasusi Femi alias FM, Adewale Femi alias FM, Adeolodi Olayosi alias PEDRO and Babalola Ezekiel.

“Investigations revealed that the suspects attacked and robbed no fewer than nine POS operators in Ado-Ekiti between June 19, 2024 and August 5, 2024.

“The suspects confessed during interrogation to having robbed POS operators in Ori-Apata, Adebayo, Basiri, Better Life, Olaoluwa, Oke-Ila, Housing and Moferere, all in Ado-Ekiti metropolis.

“Investigations revealed that at the time of their arrest, they were in their various criminal hideouts and were planning further attacks on POS operators and other innocent traders.
A locally made single-barrelled pistol loaded with a live cartridge was seized from them.”

Abutu said the three other suspects were arrested in connection with the killing of a woman, Adeyemi Aina, in the metropolis.

“You will recall that on 06/07/2024 at about 06:30am, a 56-year-old woman, one Adeyemi Aina, was attacked by an assailant on a motorcycle at Fabian Junction, NTA Road, Ado-Ekiti. The hoodlum shot her dead, took about 155,000 Naira from her and fled the scene.

“On 26/07/2024, one Omowaye Ayodele was arrested in Akure, Ondo State in connection with a case of kidnapping and murder. During interrogation, the suspect confessed that the victim, the late Adeyemi Aina, was shot and robbed in his presence by one Busari Lookman.”

“Intensified efforts by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) led to the arrest of Busari Lookman. During interrogation, he confessed to the commission of the crime and named one Onyema John Sunday and Ojo Temidayo alias YELLOW as his accomplices who were subsequently arrested and also confessed to the commission of the crime. During search of Busari Lookman's house and premises, a black cardigan worn by the suspect during the operation was recovered.”

He added: “While all the arrested suspects will face charges, efforts will certainly be intensified to ensure the arrest of the few others who are currently on the run.”
