ESPN's Jeremy Fowler provides update on Trent Williams' departure from the San Francisco 49ers

As the NFL preseason continues, the San Francisco 49ers have to do without one of their currently best players: the left tackle Trent Williams.

Brandon Aiyuk The contract dispute has received the lion's share of media coverage, but Williams could have a bigger impact on the 49ers than the wide receiver, and the offensive lineman wants to get paid. In Saturday's edition of Fowler filesESPN's Jeremy Fowler provided an update on Williams' absence.

“I'm told Trent Williams is playing golf right now. He's literally relaxing,” Fowler said, via SportsCenter. “I'm told they're going to have to adjust the contract if they want his services. That's the way it is. He's made $150 million in his career at 35 years old. Best left tackle in the game, but only the fifth or fourth highest paid left tackle, so they've got to do something here. I'm told he's ready to hang on even longer.

“The problem is, if they had acted [Brandon] With Aiyuk, it's a lot easier to get that deal done. Now they're trying to juggle both contracts at the same time. It was tricky, but Aiyuk kind of took priority because it was urgent, but Williams will have to adjust it in the next week or two.”

Of course, it would be good for the 49ers to keep both Aiyuk and Williams happy, and it looks like they'll try to do that, but money is limited in the NFL. Regardless, losing either player would be a major blow, but it looks like both could stay in San Francisco.

As for the impact of Williams' walkout on the team, it seems Williams currently has the support of his teammates as he tries to right the wrongs in what he believes is a wrong contract.

“Trent is an incredible leader,” full-back Kyle Juszczyk told reporters about 49ers Webzone“He has this aura about him that makes us all think so highly of him, and he's so talented. People seem to gravitate towards him.”

“So when he's there, there's a sense of camaraderie. It definitely pushes other offensive players to reach that standard. But I'm really confident he'll be here soon and I think we'll work things out.”

Additionally, George Kittle He also praised his teammate: “Trent Williams is Trent Williams,” Kittle said. “He's the best football player of all time. He's like him and Aaron Donald – I mean, the ones I played against. To anyone who wants to list players from the 90s and 80s: I'm sorry. But he's the best I've ever played with.”

“And he's a huge human being, too. He's a silverback. He just has presence and not having him in the locker room at all and stuff is weird. But we all love Trent and he's doing what he thinks is best for himself, so it's OK.”

Unfortunately, Trent Williams and the 49ers will likely work something out for 2024, but the sooner the better for San Francisco as they have Super Bowl ambitions again this season.
