West Bromwich Albion – Leeds United 0-0: Baggies saved in first home game

0

West Bromwich Albion had to settle for a disappointing goalless draw against Leeds United in the Baggies' first Championship home game of the season.

In a game Leeds achieved their second draw in two consecutive Championship games despite only two shots on goal, while Albion could not build on their season-opening away win in west London at Queens Park Rangers.

Leeds head coach Daniel Farke made an enforced change from the team that drew 3-3 with Portsmouth on matchday one, bringing in Dutch striker Joel Piroe in anticipation of the planned sale of Georginio Rutter to Brighton.

But after making 11 changes for the midweek League Cup defeat at League Two side Fleetwood, Albion manager Carlos Corberan retained the same side that won 3-1 at QPR on Matchday 1 thanks to a hat-trick from Josh Maja.

But although the mood at kick-off was exuberant, the game failed to really inspire enthusiasm after a minute's respectful applause in memory of the two popular former Albion employees Craig Shakespeare and Kevin Campbell.

It was only in injury time of the first half that either team had a real chance, when a header from Leeds defender Pascal Struijk was deflected just wide of the goal after a cross from Ilia Gruev.
