0

It's summer in the NBA, so it's time to learn some history. The Philadelphia 76ers are one of the oldest franchises in the NBA, with their history dating back to the 1949-50 season.

Over the course of that long period, the team has moved hundreds of players through the City of Brotherly Love. Sixers Wire takes a look at the number 17 worn by 13 of those players throughout the franchise's history. This ongoing series will go through all of the jersey numbers worn throughout the franchise's history.

Here is the list of the 13 who have worn the number 17 in Sixers history:

Wally Osterkorn, 1951-1952

Osterkorn wore two numbers, 8 and 17, during the 1951-52 season and averaged 7.4 points and 6.7 rebounds for the Syracuse Nationals. He wore number 8 in the other three seasons he played in the league.

Jim Neal, 1953–1954

Neal played 67 games for the Nationals with the number 17 pick, averaging 4.7 points and 3.8 rebounds.

Jim Tucker, 1954–1957

Tucker played 99 games in his NBA career, all for the Nationals, averaging 4.1 points and 3.5 rebounds.

Togo Palazzi, 1957-1960

Palazzi is better known for his time with the Boston Celtics. He played 187 games for the Nationals and averaged 8.9 points and 3.8 rebounds. For Syracuse, he wore two jersey numbers, 6 and 17.

Albert King, 1987-1988

King played for the New Jersey Nets against the Sixers wearing the number 55 jersey, played one season in Philadelphia and averaged 7.2 points and 3 rebounds during the 1987–1988 season.

Charles Shackleford, 1992-1993

Shackleford played two seasons for Philadelphia, wearing two numbers. In the 1992-93 season, he wore number 17 and averaged 4 points and 4.3 rebounds.

Casper Ware, 2013-2014

Ware played only nine games and averaged 5.3 points and 1.1 assists.

JJ Redick, 2017-2019

Redick played two very successful seasons in Philadelphia, averaging 17.6 points and making 40.7% of his three-point shots. He left to join the New Orleans Pelicans, and the Sixers greatly missed his three-point shooting.

Vincent Poirier, 2020-2021

Poirer played just 10 games for Philadelphia, averaging 0.8 points and 1.4 rebounds before being released, expressing disappointment that coach Doc Rivers didn't give him a chance.

Ignas Brazdeikis, 2021

Brazdeikis, corner left in the photo above, played one game for the Sixers and grabbed two rebounds in that game.

Braxton Keys, 2022

Key played two games for Philadelphia before moving to the Detroit Pistons for a bigger opportunity.

PJ Tucker, 2023-2024

Tucker played 78 games for Philadelphia over two seasons. He averaged just 3.5 points and 4.0 rebounds for the Sixers, but his impact went beyond the score. He was an important voice in Philadelphia's locker room. He was sent to the Los Angeles Clippers in the big James Harden trade.

Buddy Hield, 2024

Hield averaged 12.2 points and 3.2 rebounds in 32 games with 14 starts, hitting 38.9% of his three-pointers. He had a rough playoff performance against the New York Knicks, but he had a great finish as he scored 20 points off the bench. In the 2024 offseason, he joined the Golden State Warriors in a sign-and-trade deal.
