Josh Heupel updates the lineup after the second practice game for Tennessee Football

The Tennessee Volunteers have their best roster and their best football team under Vols head coach Josh Heupel, according to Vols head coach Josh Heupel. “We have, without a doubt, the best and strongest roster we've ever had. We've had to deal with some really unique circumstances – we never worked our way out of the crisis. But we're at the best point we've ever been, and that's not even close.”

Those are the head coach's words about the Vols' 2024 roster, and looking at the lineup, there aren't many positions where there are questions for the Vols. However, there are still a few position battles as fall camp nears its end.

Josh Heupel updated the status of some position battles on the Tennessee Football Depth Chart on Thursday night after their second scrimmage.

On Boo Carter after Jourdan Thomas’ injury:
“A playmaker who is extremely physical. He plays extremely hard. I think the biggest area where Boo can improve is his continued improvement in the frame and scheme of the defense. Alignment, effort and his physical attributes will be the deciding factors from there.”

On the schedule for Tight End this season:
“We're going to have to use multiple players at that position. All three of them are going to play a lot of snaps for us. When we first started here, we had to deal with some things and the space was probably smaller than you would like at times, but I'm really happy with the three players we have there. All three are capable of playing at a championship level.”

On Kicking and Special Teams Battles:
“We have a lot of competition at those positions. That's kickoff players, punters, you know, your (extra points), your snappers. We've got everything mapped out. You're still in real competition here. As we get closer to the end of training camp, some of those decisions will be made.”
