Fulham may have lost their star midfielder Joao Palhinha to Bayern Munich, but they were able to sign Emile Smith Rowe and are now hoping for at least their third consecutive place in midfield.

Smith Rowe scored in the Cottagers' final pre-season friendly, a 2-0 win at Hoffenheim, which meant the Cottagers had won four of their five games this summer.

Team news for Man Utd vs Fulham

As was the case last season, United have been plagued by injuries, particularly in defence, with Leny Yoro out for the first three months of the season following his £52m transfer from Lille.

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are doubtful for their participation, while Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui could make their debuts. Luke Shaw will miss the start of the season due to an injury sustained in the summer.

Joshua Zirkzee will be hoping to make his debut after starting on the bench at Wembley last weekend. Ten Hag started a 4-2-2-2 formation against City, with Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount in advanced central positions, and either an unfit Zirkzee or the unfavoured Jadon Sancho are his options up front.

Fulham have a fully fit squad ahead of their opening match, confirmed coach Marco Silva.

In the last friendly match in Hoffenheim, Silva used Rodrigo Muniz up front in a 4-3-3 formation, with Smith Rowe alongside Andreas Pereira and Sasa Lukic in midfield. The Serbian international Lukic seems to be the main replacement for the departed goalkeeper Palhinha.

New signing Jorge Cuenca is an option in central defence and Ryan Sessegnon is fit to make his second debut for the Cottagers after being released as a likely substitute by Tottenham.

This first game of the season is a bit of a free kick for Fulham, but United showed improvement in the Community Shield and the hosts deserve a narrow victory.
