A second man was arrested by police in a series of attacks in which people were thrown liquids from vehicles.

The incidents occurred on Church Street, Cannon Street and Cambridge Street in Wellingborough at around 10pm BST on Monday, Northamptonshire Police said.

One victim reported skin irritation. Tests are currently underway to confirm the substance's cause.

A 19-year-old man from Wellingborough who was arrested in connection with the case was released on bail and a second man, aged 24, was later arrested and also released on bail.

Police said the incidents were likely random and not directed against any particular population group or gender.

They said there had been other similar reports, but they did not believe any of the other incidents were related to the two men arrested.

Ch Insp Carl Wilson said: “We recognise that incidents of this nature are of great concern to those involved and to local communities. Our intensive investigations have shown that there appears to be no connection between the incidents on 12 August and those on other days where other perpetrators may be involved.”

“In connection with the incidents on August 12, we believe that the substance sprayed on people was not corrosive. Tests are currently being conducted to confirm its exact nature.”
