Is there such a thing as a toxic fandom?

Singer-songwriters Kiri T and Jay Fung discuss toxic fanbases with Lindsey McAlister, artist and founder of the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation

Kiri T says: Yes
“I believe there is such a thing as a toxic fandom. I think it happens whenever fans get too attached to their idols. It's a difficult balance because while a supportive community is nice, there are bound to be conflicts and disagreements that can worsen if not handled properly. I think any kind of fanatical behavior – be it bullying or trolling – is unhealthy. However, I also think it's inevitable. Like any bell curve, there will always be outliers from the majority. I don't think these fans are born with ill intentions, but they probably crave a connection with the artist. Musicians can help keep their fans in check. [by urging them to] behave politely.”

Jay Fung says: Yes
“Yes. Although celebrities and artists are public figures, I believe that they are also just normal people who have private lives, families, and things that they may prefer to keep to themselves. When fans engage in behavior that is considered unacceptable and potentially even harmful, especially when it violates privacy, then I actually believe that there is such a thing as a toxic fandom.”
