MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) – The North Monterey County Fire Department confirms PG&E is sending crews to fix a large gas leak near Castroville along Espinosa Road.

Both the fire department and PG&E confirm the leak, and if left unchecked, it could affect tens of thousands of people on the Monterey Peninsula.

Officials from both agencies said the leak started along Espinosa Road when a tractor struck a gas line.

A residential building and a business had to be evacuated.

Monterey County said a curfew was imposed in the area between Highway 183 and Espinosa Road 192 due to the gas leak.

Highway 183 along Espinosa Road is closed to 160 Espinosa Road.

According to PG&E, this gas pipeline is an important transmission line to the Monterey Peninsula.

There is no estimated time of arrival for the road.
