Free back-to-school information fair in Clinton County “a success”

0

ST. JOHNS, Mich. (WILX) – On Thursday, Clinton County's Project Connect helped families in need. The group distributed free supplies to ensure local children were prepared for the school year.

“We know that it is inevitably difficult for families to put food on the table or pay rent, so extending school time a little helps,” says Marie Barks, Project Connect coordinator.

Project Connect wasn't the only organization involved in giving away the freebies. University of Michigan Health Sparrow conducted health screenings and Douglas J. Aveda students handed out free haircuts.

“They don't have the opportunity to go to a hairdresser, so we do it for free to help them. We learn in the process too,” said Arieonna Montgomery, a hairdressing student.

“It didn't exist when my kids were little, but it would have been great because we had a lot of problems as young parents,” Lisa Brownlee said.

Project Connect also stopped in Bath, Ovid Elsie and Maple Rapids. In total, they served nearly 600 children.
