One of the best teams in the country begins its quest for a national title on Friday when Bishop Gorman (Nevada) hosts Kahuku (Hawaii) to open the 2024 high school football season.

Bishop Gorman begins the season ranked No. 2 in the SBLive/SI Top 25 preseason rankings in high school football. And although Kahuku is not ranked, it will be less than a year behind then-second-ranked St. John Bosco when the two teams meet in 2023.

Bishop Gorman

The Gaels enter 2024 as the No. 2 seed after finishing 12-0 last year and defeating two other teams from this year's preseason Top 25.

Their primary playmaker on offense is wide receiver Derek Meadows. The 5-star recruit and LSU freshman is a 6-foot-6, 195-pound threat on the perimeter where he averaged 26.1 yards per catch and eight touchdowns last year.

Kahuku

The Red Raiders lost only two games last season, and one of those was against 2023 national champion and currently No. 1-ranked team Mater Dei.

Kahuku's other loss was to Mililani, which it defeated three weeks later to win the HHSAA Open Division state championship.
