For over a year, Tesla has been working on a unique project in Hollywood, California. The company is planning a restaurant with over 200 seats and a parking lot full of Superchargers. Although the project has been under construction for almost a year, there are now signs that it could be close to completion.

Musk first posted about the project on X (then Twitter) in January 2018, saying he would “open an old-school drive-in, roller-skating, and rock restaurant at one of the new Tesla Supercharger locations in LA.” Construction on the restaurant began last year and will have a separate cinema area with seating for 77 guests and two giant LED screens. Last year, he posted that Tesla's futuristic diner was “Grease meets The Jetsons with Supercharging” and speculated about building a Tesla hotel. While the original design called for 32 chargers, Tesla filed plans for an adjacent property earlier this year to add 48 additional Supercharger stalls with canopies.

The website Drive Tesla Canada spotted a job posting on LinkedIn for a Tesla Diner Experience Specialist, posted by EVCareers.com. The job description calls for someone to advise on the opening of the restaurant, collaborate on menu changes and coordinate the drive-in's programming. The salary range is $83,600 to $285,000, and applicants must be willing to work nights and weekends. At the time of this writing, only 20 people have applied through LinkedIn. There is also a separate job posting for a Location Manager, whose responsibilities include facility management and traffic coordination.

Josh West recently posted a video on YouTube showing the construction site. The building has a curved style that West describes as Art Deco and consists of two circular structures stacked on top of each other with outdoor space on the second level. Drone footage shows the building is still under construction, but the cinema auditoriums are visible. Tesla investor Sawyer Merritt posted new X-photos showing the building is now clad in shiny steel cladding.

Tendency:

Offering charging stations in restaurants is not a new concept. Last year, Subway sandwich shops announced plans to add Subway Oasis-branded charging stations with canopies, chargers and picnic tables. Starbucks continues to expand its charging offerings, with plans to add 100 new charging stations, bringing the total to over 1,000. Charging stations are also available in movie theaters like Cinemark. Earlier this year, Electrify America opened its first indoor charging station in San Francisco. The facility features temperature-controlled lounge areas with food and drink vendors, Wi-Fi and restrooms.

Electric vehicles still make up a relatively small market share. According to Edmunds data, sales of new electric cars in May 2024 were about 6.8%. While chargers are becoming more common in shopping malls and outside restaurants, there are few projects that take advantage of the large number of people charging electric vehicles. Charging is still a gambling experience in many places and far from luxurious. A study by ChargerHelp found that actual uptime was less than 74%. Other companies are trying to incentivize charging. Ford has developed a new plan in Texas to offer free off-peak charging.

Tesla's diner is likely to be a hit with Tesla owners and brand fans. The more interesting question is whether the concept will find other imitators.
