In The Plucky Squire the protagonist plays a 2D swordsman So He bravely breaks out of the confines of his storybook and enters the three-dimensional world of a child's room. You spend your time jumping back and forth between these different levels and experiencing a great cartoon adventure.

There is now a release date: September 17th.

Plucky Squire comes from Jonathan Biddle, one of the creators of 2018's Sword Of Ditto, a game with lots of great ideas but mixed execution. Sounds like the perfect person to try something a second time. This time, Biddle has formed a new studio, All Possible Futures, with former Game Freak artist James Turner, and they're once again working with Ditto publisher Devolver Digital.

Plucky Squire also made it onto our list of most anticipated games of 2024.

I think you can look at the trailer above and say, “Yeah, that's to be expected, because of the art, the animation, the energy and all that,” but no. I think it's because it's coherent. A 2D guy bursting into a 3D world? Seen it, done it. A Fairytale book Guy bursting into the world outside the book? That's ludonarrative cohesion, mate, and we games journalists can't get enough of it. We'd smash some Zelda enemies with a sword until we were dusty skeletons if the whole thing was tied into some clever context.

What is this? You think I am already a dusty skeleton? There's no debating that. I hope The Plucky Squire is as much fun as it looks when it comes out in a month.
