Sedona News – Daytime closures are planned next week on State Route 89A along the switchbacks in Oak Creek Canyon south of Flagstaff as work continues on a rockfall mitigation project, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

SR 89A will be closed in both directions on a 3-mile stretch south of the Oak Creek Vista overlook from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (August 19-23).

Drivers who would normally use SR 89A between Sedona and Flagstaff during the closures should plan to detour via Interstate 17 and SR 179.

ADOT's safety project, which will continue into the fall, requires closures and lane restrictions in the switchback area of Oak Creek Canyon. SR 89A will remain narrowed to one lane, with alternating traffic controlled by temporary trailer-based traffic lights.

Crews are working to stabilize a rock face above SR 89A where a rockfall occurred in March 2023.

A 10-foot vehicle width restriction also applies in the project work zone. ADOT and its contractor are working with local and regional safety agencies to maintain access for emergency vehicles and be prepared should events, including wildfires, require response.

For real-time road conditions, visit ADOT's Arizona Traveler Information website at az511.gov, download the az511 app (available for Apple or Android devices), or call 511.
