NY Giants release experienced DB after signing two safeties for more depth

0

As we all know, availability is the best skill, and that just wasn't the case for the NY Giants with veteran safety/cornerback Jalen Mills. Mills was signed in the offseason not only to fight for a spot on the roster, but also to provide a veteran leader to a young secondary.

That won't be the case, as he's leaving town before he's even put on the pads for Big Blue. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Giants have decided to release him before their Week 2 preseason game against the Texans. We can't say we're too surprised:

According to Schefter, Mills is expected to attract a lot of interest now that he is a free agent again. He struggled with calf issues with the Giants, which unfortunately played a big role in Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll's decision to part ways with him.

Mills has played for the Eagles and Patriots throughout his career. Now he's looking for a new home. While some fans are concerned about DB depth, it's important to remember that Schoen signed safeties Raheem Layne and Jonathan Sutherland prior to announcing the Mills news.

Neither is a spectacular move by any means, but with the Giants dealing with more injuries at the position, it made sense for Schoen to add some depth to help out this weekend against the Texans. Many people are still hoping the Giants will sign Justin Simmons, but that's unlikely.

Simmons, a four-time All-Pro pick, has recently visited the Saints and Falcons. Right now, it looks like he'll be playing in the NFC South next season unless a surprise team steps in at the last second and snatches him from New Orleans or Atlanta. As for Mills, things didn't work out for him in East Rutherford due to his calf strain. The Giants just couldn't wait for him to get back to 100 percent.
