Live updates: Kamala Harris presents economic plan, Trump gives press conference

0

Vice President Kamala Harris' appearance with President Joe Biden on Thursday to tout efforts to lower prescription drug costs offers a first taste of how she plans to deal with his unpopular economic policies, according to people familiar with her plans.

Harris is caught in a political bind. While certain aspects of Biden's record are popular, voters generally believe he is performing poorly on the economy.

For this reason, her advisers do not expect Harris to fly the flag of “Bidenomics” and lump everything together in a way that has proven unsuccessful from an embassy perspective.

Instead, its approach will be more focused on the individual and his or her economic needs.

She is expected to highlight the areas of Biden's policies that enjoy broad support among voters, while also pushing for a range of additional measures that would reduce health care, food and housing costs.

That includes lowering drug costs, which was the focus of Thursday's event in Maryland. Polls have shown that policies like capping the price of insulin and lowering Medicare drug costs are popular.

Aides say Harris' vision for the economy does not differ significantly from Biden's, and the economic speech she plans to give on Friday will closely align with many of the current administration's priorities.

The difference, say people familiar with her plans, is in the emphasis. In her speech on Friday, for example, she plans to address price gouging and call for a nationwide ban on the practice. She will also aggressively criticize companies for setting excessive prices.

She is also expected to put forward plans to improve housing and drug prices – with a focus on the impact of these measures on the American middle class and on Americans with children.
