New York Giants release defender who is Super Bowl champion

The New York Giants released veteran safety Jalen Mills ahead of training camp on Thursday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Mills, who began his career with the Philadelphia Eagles (2016-2020) as a seventh-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, was released to make room for two new Giants signings at the safety position, which took place on Wednesday.

In order to create more space in the squad, the Giants surprisingly traded experienced defensive tackle Jordan Phillips to the Dallas Cowboys late Wednesday evening.

Although Mills was signed in the offseason, the Super Bowl LII champion was never able to make his training camp debut with the Giants due to a calf strain that landed him on the non-football injured list.

The Giants have major problems at the safety position, both in terms of depth and the injury situation. The current starting duo consists of Jason Pinnock and Dane Belton.

Meanwhile, freshman Tyler Nubin is working his way into the rotation after being slowed by a calf injury early in training camp. Camp star Gervarrius Owens is battling a knee injury and Elijah Riley has a concussion.

The Giants signed free-agent safeties Raheem Layne and Jonathan Sutherland on Wednesday.
