What just happened? I'm not quite sure!

Melbourne started with a 20-metre restart when Ryan Papenhuyzen kicked the ball and it bounced away, hoping to end the first half.

But Penrith contested the restart of play and replays show Papenhuyzen kicked the ball despite left winger Grant Anderson being offside.

In a tackle, the offside rule applies and the tackle is considered successful.

Shortly before the half-time whistle, Nathan Cleary prepares for a penalty.

“It's really hard to believe because when you think about it, we see this practically every week where a player is in front of the person who is tapping the football,” Cameron Smith said in a commentary.

Cleary shoots accurately – four points at half-time.
