Mediterranean diet can improve your mental health

Eating foods like fish, olive oil, whole grains and tomatoes has long been known to do wonders for physical well-being, and new research has found that it can reduce anxiety.

A study of more than 1,500 people examined the traditional Western diet – which consists of many processed foods – and found that those who ate Mediterranean dishes suffered fewer mental health problems.

Professor Lina Begdache of Binghamton University in New York said: “Stress is considered a precursor to psychological suffering and research, including our own, has shown that the Mediterranean diet alleviates psychological suffering.”

“So part of the puzzle could be explained by the fact that the Mediterranean diet might be associated with a reduction in the negative components of perceived stress and an improvement in its positive attributes.”
