Democratic U.S. Representative Steny Hoyer of Maryland suffered a stroke over the weekend but is recovering, his office said Tuesday.

Margaret Mulkerrin, Hoyer's deputy chief of staff and spokeswoman, said he suffered a “mild ischemic stroke” and was receiving medical treatment.

“Mr. Hoyer has responded well to treatment and has no ongoing symptoms. He expects to be able to return to his normal daily routine next week,” Mulkerrin said in a statement. “Mr. Hoyer's wife and family would like to express their deepest gratitude to his medical team.”

The possible cause of the stroke was not disclosed.

Hoyer, 85, has been in Congress since 1981. In January, he said he would run for re-election.

“I believe I have more work to do for my district, my state and my country,” he said in a statement at the time. “I am blessed to have the good health, strength and continued passion necessary to continue to serve my constituents during this time.” decisive moment for Maryland and America.”

Hoyer resigned from his position as House Majority Leader in 2022, where he served as chief deputy to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and was replaced by Democratic Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York.
