We are now at the halfway point of the Coppa Italia first round draw, after eight matches were played on Friday and Saturday night, including a narrow penalty shootout win for Antonio Conte's Napoli and a surprise defeat to Hellas Verona.

Six Serie A teams were in action in the Coppa Italia on Saturday, namely Udinese, Genoa, Monza, Empoli, Napoli and Verona, although the latter is the first top-flight team to be eliminated from the competition this season.

Paolo Zannetti's side were beaten 2-1 by Serie B side Cesena, who were promoted from Serie C at the end of last season. Verona were also the only home team not to progress on Saturday night.

Napoli drew 0-0 with Modena but then lost 4-3 on penalties after two brilliant saves from Alex Meret.

Udinese enjoyed their friendly against Avellino and four different names – Brenner, Florian Thauvin, Lorenzo Lucca and Keinan Davis – got on the scoresheet.

Empoli also managed to score four goals against a lower-class opponent in Catanzaro, but unlike Udinese they failed to concede a goal. Genoa also celebrated a routine 1-0 win against Reggiana.

Like Napoli, Monza also had to face South Tyrol on penalties and needed nine successful attempts before the Serie A team made the breakthrough.

Monza – South Tyrol 0:0 (9:8 on penalties)

Cremonese – Bari 1:1 (5:4 on penalties)

Naples – Modena 0:0 (4:3 on penalties)
