Viral video: Man explains different types of onions, but the Internet is not interested

0

What makes us cry and yet we still seek it out every day? It's onions! Onions are a rich source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and are used in various cuisines worldwide. To use onions, you should first figure out which variety you are buying. Different types of onions vary in appearance, spiciness, sweetness and texture. Knowing how to tell yellow onions from sweet onions is important for any good cook. In a recent Instagram video, Cory Rodriguez (@healthwithcory) explained five different types of onions and their uses:

  • Yellow onions have the most intense flavor and are almost inedible raw, but when heated the flavor and texture change. This is your all-round cooking choice.
  • White onions have a crisper and spicier flavor that goes well with pasta, stir-fries, or even salsa.
  • Sweet onion has a very sweet aroma and is perfect for broths and especially for frying due to the thick onion layers.
  • Red onion has the mildest flavor. It is best eaten either grilled, as it does not dry out, or raw in dishes such as guacamole or sandwiches, and is best pickled.
  • Spring onion is mainly used as a garnish and goes best with soups, stir-fries and even tacos.

However, one look at the comments section of this viral video is enough to see that viewers have little interest in the types of onions.

“I cook with whatever onions are on sale,” wrote one. Another echoed, “I just buy the cheapest onions.” A third wrote, “I make $11 an hour. I cook with whatever is on sale.”

While some said they would just buy the cheapest, others shared their culturally-based opinion. “As Indians, we use red onions for everything,” wrote one, and another added, “As Nigerians, red onions are good for EVERYTHING.”
