The first trailer for Gladiator 2 has a release date – soon.

In the highly anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott's original 2000 film, Normal People star Paul Mescal plays the role of Lucius, the son of Connie Nielsen's Lucilla.

In the sequel, he stars alongside actor Pedro Pascal from “The Last of Us,” and the cast also includes Denzel Washington and Joseph Quinn from “Stranger Things.”

Vanity Fair published the first photos of Mescal, Pascal and Co. in action earlier this week and confirmed the release date for the trailer as July 9.

Gladiator 2 takes place nearly two decades after the events of the first film. Lucius (Mescal) is now an adult and estranged from his mother Lucilla (Nielson), having been sent as a child to the North African region of Numidia, far away from the Roman Empire.

The film begins in Numidia. Viewers see Lucius living a relatively simple life with his wife and child. But when the Romans advance ruthlessly into North Africa, he is forced to act and comes into conflict with General Acacius (Pascal).

Nielsen reprises her role as Lucilla in the sequel, and Sir Derek Jacobi returns as Senator Gracchus.

Gladiator 2 has a new release date of 15 November – was brought forward from the originally planned release date of November 22nd.

Hopefully the trailer will shed further light on the characters of the supporting cast.

Washington's role is hinted at as a former slave who became a wealthy merchant with influence at the Roman court, while Quinn and “The White Lotus” actor Fred Hechinger play co-emperors Caracalla and Geta.

Hechinger replaced Barry Keoghan in “Gladiator 2” after the actor from Saltburn had to cancel due to scheduling conflicts.

Gladiator 2 will be released in UK cinemas on November 15th.
