The PGA Tour finally offers its fans an epic YouTube golf challenge

0

Before the Tour Championship, two worlds will finally collide in Atlanta.

For the first time, the PGA Tour and YouTube Golf will join forces for a challenge called The Creator Classic.

This isn't the first time a Tour event has partnered with content creators, but for the Tour to create something like this for Tour Championship week is huge.

From the Q in Myrtle Beach to Bryson DeChambeau of LIV Golf taking over the golf spectrum on YouTube, people love this type of entertainment. It goes even further, as there are many popular channels featuring talented golfers.

The goal is to evolve the game and by incorporating YouTube Golf, the tour can reach the younger audience it desires.

Before the top 30 take on Eastlake Golf Club's newly restored “Golden Age” back nine, some of golf's most popular content creators will play a nine-hole contest on Wednesday, August 28 at 4 p.m. ET.

The same course conditions apply to these creatives as to the professionals at the Tour Championship.

There will be 16 creators participating in this event, and those who have already confirmed include Tyler Toney of Dude Perfect, Fat Perez of Bob Does Sports, The Bryan Bros, and Good Good creators Garrett Clark, Brad Dalke, and Sean Walsh.

It will be interesting to see who else they recruit for the challenge. Hopefully Paige Spiranac will be there as she is one of the most influential female golfers of all time.

The participants play eight holes in gross stroke play, followed by a playoff between the best four players on the last hole.

They will officially be the first to tackle the restored course. Fans can look forward to such challenges or events because these creators are personable and know how to entertain the crowds.

Just look at the success of the qualifier for the Myrtle Beach Classic.

The YouTube video has garnered 981,140 views for the qualifier alone since it was broadcast three months ago. The 10 videos combined have 1,327,630 views. There were also a total of 3,423 comments and 17,942 likes.

These are fantastic numbers for a first-time event and I think it's great that the PGA Tour wants to have fun with these content creators at the Tour Championship.

This event will be streamed live on the PGA Tour YouTube channel, Peacock and ESPN+. The Tour's channels on PlutoTV, Roku, Samsung TV Plus, Tubi and XUMO will also have coverage.

The PGA Tour has partnered with Pro Shop Studios, the production company behind the Netflix series “Full Swing,” to handle on-site production and broadcast.

“Golf is experiencing an explosion in popularity right now,” said Chad Mumm, founder and president of Pro Shop, in the press release. “For many young people, some of the biggest stars have emerged on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. The Creator Classic will bring the brightest of these new stars to golf's biggest stage and give them the chance to compete in a PGA Tour environment in front of fans locally and around the world.”

“The combination of these creators, who command millions of loyal fans, with the unparalleled competitive atmosphere, production value and tremendous reach of the PGA TOUR promises a groundbreaking golf event like no other.”

Mumm is absolutely right with his quote. This event has the potential to be a record-breaking event in terms of viewership and reach. If the Tour wants to get as much attention as possible for its product, partnering with YouTube Golf is a great place to start.

The Creator Classic will be broadcast in standard broadcast quality. ShotLink scoring and data will be provided. Trackman will be available for shot tracking and on-screen graphics. These additions will allow fans to see how well the Creators are doing under tour-like conditions.

Moderators will be in the booth sharing on-course action with presenters to give fans the full package. Participants will also be recording and sharing their content on the nine holes.

The best part is that anyone with a Wednesday ticket for the Tour Championship can stay and watch The Creator Classic.

I like this idea because it shows how the PGA Tour can adapt to the ever-changing golf landscape. Hopefully the Creator Classic will become an annual event or, better yet, something that happens multiple times a year.

The more attention golf gets, the more it can grow, so I can't wait to see what the Pro Shop and the PGA Tour come up with.
